The most attractive mountain bike tours on the Hochkönig

At the summit of emotions, the name says it all, because nowhere else in the Salzburg region is it so much fun escaping to the top, crossing alpine landscapes and conquering mountain peaks. What is fun on two legs is also great on two wheels. The mountain bike tours on the Hochkönig combine sporting challenges for advanced and pros with a magnificent view and one or the other indispensable stop, including the finest regional cuisine. The following tours definitely want to be conquered.
King’s tour on the Hochkönig
Perhaps the best-known MTB tour on the Hochkönig leads through the three communities of Maria Alm, Mühlbach and Dienten on and around the summit of emotions in four exciting and sweaty stages. This is where the true kings of the mountains are at home, because the 109.9 km with an approximate driving time of 20 hours demand a lot from even enduring bikers. The moderately difficult route runs through cool forests, wide valleys and magnificent alpine landscapes with stops at attractive vantage points.
The Königstour begins in Natrun and leads on the first stage over the Filzensattel and the Reicheralm to Dienten. The second stage begins at the local ski center. The section tackles the Dientner Saddle, the Arthurhaus and parts of the Watzmann-Hochkönig circuit on the way to Mühlbach. Here we continue on day 3 full of energy. On the way back to Dienten, the Karbachalm, Scheppalm and Zapferlalm as well as the Wastlhöhe have to be mastered. The last stage finally focuses on Maria Alm. Among other things, the Abergalm area, the Hundstein, the Kröllalm and the Bärmoosalm are on the plan before heading back into the valley.
Sonnhof tip: The Königstour is not only one of the most beautiful mountain bike tours on the Hochkönig, but also particularly popular with e-bikers. With the slight support of an electric motor, cycling is even more relaxed. The dense network of charging stations also guarantees an uninterrupted power supply. Charge the battery, taste regional delicacies and enjoy the view – a dream come true at the peak of emotions!

Hundstein round
The “Hundstoa Biag Di” mountain bike race is one of the toughest of its kind in the entire Salzburg region. A small section of this sweaty race is on the agenda on the Hundstein Circuit, embedded in one of the most difficult mountain bike tours on the Hochkönig. The approx. 45 km long lap should only be tackled by experienced drivers with stamina. In just over seven hours, you have to ride 1,664 meters uphill and downhill, starting and finishing in the center of Maria Alm. The way to the Statzerhaus, at 2,117 m the highest point of the tour, may be tedious and difficult, but the view from the summit is all the more worthwhile.

Reicheralm circuit
The ski center in Dienten is the starting point for a short but strenuous tour with a steep incline. On the way to the Reicheralm there is a good 700 meters in altitude to overcome. Directly after the place-name sign in Dienten, a paved supply road leads straight up the incline. The first stop is the Grünegg snack station – perfect for a small snack and equipped with a charging station for e-mountain bikers. After this short break, you have to conquer the next section up to the Reicheralm. Once at the top, the far-reaching view of the Hochkönig massif inspires before you return to Dienten on the same route, past the Hirschegg and Scheibegg farms. The 17.5 km should take about four driving hours.

Panorama tour Maria Alm-Filzensattel
Many of the mountain bike tours on the Hochkönig are primarily intended for experienced bikers and e-cyclists, and this also applies to the 42.6 km long panorama tour. The pure driving time may be less than four hours, but the extremely bumpy terrain – 1,974 meters uphill, 1,703 meters downhill – demands everything despite the reasonably relaxing descents. However, it quickly becomes clear that the panorama tour is rightly named, because there is a lot to see and discover on the long crossing from Maria Alm to the surrounding area of Bischofshofen. During a stopover in Hinterthal, the charming village church is visited before the steep ascent begins. The highest point of this mountain bike tour on the Hochkönig is at 1,746 m just after the Zacheralm. Culinary delights await tired calves at the Tiergartenalm and Mittereggalm before heading around the Hochkeil to Haidberg near Bischofshofen. Finally, the bike taxi brings exhausted bikers back to the starting point.
